What is Kinesiology?

Kinesiologists treat the whole person
and rely on feedback
from your body
to progress the treatment.

Kinesiology uses muscle testing to detect and treat the underlying causes of any distress you may be experiencing e.g. anxiety, digestive problems, back pain, headaches. We draw from a large menu of techniques to rebalance your whole system. This may include, but is not limited to: working on reflex points, inner language reprogramming, inquiry into unconscious beliefs, nutrition adjustments, trauma release, and emotional stress release. Clients typically experience improvement on their first visit.

Kinesiologists treat the whole person and rely on the feedback from your body to progress the treatment. Chemical, physical, mental, energetic and environmental aspects of your life may all come up to be examined and dealt with. This is not a passive treatment. You are required to engage in your healing through 'homeplay,' a plan of recovery you continue when you return to your outside life.

Kinesiology has been used successfully to treat

Anxiety symptoms, depression, frustration. Irritable Bowel and other digestive upsets. Food intolerances. Headaches and fatigue. Learning difficulties. Fears and phobias. Behavioural challenges e.g. ADD, ADHD, impulse control. Lack of confidence. Back, joint and neck pain. Infertility. Insomnia. Palpitations and panic attacks. Grief or loss. Exam stress. Lack of motivation, direction or focus.

Used as a preventative therapy, imbalances can be corrected before becoming major health problems. We always encourage you to consult your doctor to rule out any serious health conditions. If your condition does need medical treatment, Kinesiology can remove the emotional stress associated with dealing with the condition, and get you into an optimum state for healing. When the natural balance of the body is restored, healing is accelerated.

Kinesiology is non-invasive, safe and cost effective. Clients remain fully clothed. It is suitable for adults and children.

Kinesiology for Children

Kinesiology can help children with any physical, mental, emotional or behavioural challenges. Children have been helped with learning difficulties, concentration problems, sleep issues, emotional volatility, recovery from bullying, coping with grief, loss and change, trauma release, separation anxiety and more.

As a parent you will be required to stay in the room during treatment. Treatments are fully clothed and child appropriate. The length of treatment depends on the age of the child. The parent and child engage in agreed 'homeplay' during the following weeks. Homeplay is an action plan which continues the therapeutic process at home or school. After their initial balance, children often only need to attend the clinic monthly as long as they are engaging in their homeplay. Fees for children under 12 are at a reduced rate.

Home play may include any of the following: adding specific nutrient rich foods to the diet, addressing negative self talk or beliefs, engaging in creative or emotionally expressive exercises (e.g. art therapy exercises) physical exercises to balance the body system and often to bridge cognitive developmental gaps, and the practice of new behaviours or strategies.

Kinesio-Coaching™

Kinesio-Coaching™ is the science of combining Kinesiology and modern coaching methods for optimal change, learning or performance. Kinesiology is the study and application of movement to access a balanced psychophysical state.

Kinesio-Coaching™ sessions last 1.5 hours. It is non-invasive and you remain fully clothed. You are supported by phone coaching between appointments as in the traditional coaching model.

Kinesio-Coaching™ is used to:

  • create behavioural changes with ease.
  • promote emotional, mental and spiritual well-being.
  • deal with physical fatigue or pain.
  • create healthy physical habits that support mental health.
  • create thought patterns and beliefs that support health and wellbeing.
  • de-stress and re-energise the body and mind.

Kinesiology is used for assessing and treating any imbalance in the body and mind (bodymind). Muscle testing is used to assess the energy flow in the bodymind and is also used to prioritise what your system needs to bring it into 'balance'. This 'balance' is the optimal state for learning, performance and healing and is achieved through:

  • Emotional stress release ESR. The whole psychophysical system is calmed and cleared to allow for optimal healing, learning or performance.
  • Specific body movements These movements balance the body and access various dimensions of our brain and mind (including the subconscious). Through this access we are able to replace patterns of thought, belief and behaviour with helpful alternatives. This is very effective for dealing with motivation, emotions, and fear or anxiety responses.
  • Balancing the body's energy meridians (as used in Chinese medicine). This is achieved by stimulating or calming three types of reflex points and clearing the meridians (energy channels) themselves.

Types of Kinesiology

Both types of kinesiology used at Acumen Coaching are non-invasive and the client remains fully clothed.

Touch for Health Kinesiology TFH

TFH draws from various holistic disciplines but particularly from the energetic model of traditional Chinese medicine. TFH links specific muscles with organ systems and with accupuncture meridians. TFH also enquires into the 'meaning' the discomfort has for you. Metaphors are used to consider how we might be contributing to any imbalance in our body or mind. Energies are balanced to support your goals to improve your experience of life.

Educational Kinesiology (Edu-K)

Edu-K uses specific movements and aspects of NLP to facilitate optimal learning. The mind-body system is balanced for accomplishing any behaviour or function with greater ease and efficiency. It is based on Dr. Paul Dennison's studies of the impact of movement and perception on fine motor and academic skills. Benefits include the ability to harness motivation, skills to identify and reduce stress, and increased awareness. Edu-K provides unique tools for team building , and for developing co-operation and creativity. Read Kate Kalin's recent research on the application of Educational Kinesiology for this purpose.

Edu-K tests seven dimensions of the body-mind. Within these seven dimensions a further four realms are inquired into. We discover where change needs to be made to bring the body and mind into balance for the client's chosen goal. Here you can read about the first three dimensions: Laterality, Focus and Centering.
